Addiction has long been defined as a chronic progressive disorder, but typically treated in an acute or short term model of care. People who are seeking substance abuse treatment as well as their families need to that the substance abuse treatment field is currently experiencing a shift from an acute care model (broken arm) to a chronic care or Recovery Management approach (diabetes). This is an approach where all systems of care are strength based and oriented to an individual’s values and personal goals for long term recovery. Long term strategies are most successful with community involvement and follow up. Recovery Support Services include a variety of community based, faith based, peer and professional services.
